I’m an american, but I want to buy a home in Canada (where my wife is from). How can I do this?

Can I get a mortgage from an American bank? Or do I have to go through a Canadian one?

I would guess that an American bank would be reluctant to hold a mortgage on a Canadian property too complicated to foreclose. But it wouldn’t hurt to question, lots of people own vacation properties in other countries. Likely you would have better luck with a Canadian Bank. I’d use a mortgage broker.
